Use of Potassium Permanganate in Agriculture and Animal Husbandry

Use of Potassium Permanganate in Agriculture and Animal Husbandry

Potassium Permanganate has very strong oxidizing properties. It destroys bacteria by oxidizing them due to its powerful oxidation effect.

Potassium Permanganate is used for detoxification, sterilization, and disinfection processes in animal husbandry, aquaculture, and the livestock sector.

Application Areas for Sterilization with Potassium Permanganate in Agriculture and Animal Husbandry

  • Disinfection of Aquacultured Products
  • Disinfection of Various Fish Species
  • Elimination and Control of Bacterial Diseases in Fish
  • Inhibition and Treatment of Fungal Infections in Frogs and Fish
  • Treatment of Grass Carp Trauma
  • Treatment and Control of Other Aquatic Diseases

How Does the Mechanism of Action of Potassium Permanganate Work?

During the oxidation of organic matter, potassium permanganate acts as a powerful oxidizing agent, releasing oxygen that rapidly oxidizes these substances. It exerts its bactericidal effect by oxidizing key functional groups in proteins, such as mercapto (-SH) groups, to form disulfide (-S-S-) bonds, which inactivates essential enzymes.

Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) and Potassium Permanganate are similar in terms of COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) removal. However, it has been determined that Hydrogen Peroxide provides greater COD removal. Consequently, better color removal is achieved with hydrogen peroxide.

  1. Disinfection of Aquaculture Facilities

In areas where aquaculture products are raised, bacteria form due to the presence of water and organic matter. These areas include ponds, cages, and farming facilities. To eliminate bacteria in aquaculture facilities, immersing surfaces in a 20 mg/L Potassium Permanganate solution for 30 minutes will kill the bacteria present.

  • Disinfection of Fish and Certain Seafood

These seafood products can include fish, shrimp, crabs, and fry raised in these ponds. To eliminate harmful bacteria, a bath in a 20 ppm potassium permanganate solution for 30-35 minutes will kill certain bacteria and in-vitro parasites.

  • Fish Disease Control and Prevention

Fish diseases are common in freshwater environments. In freshwater aquaculture, diseases such as red skin disease, bacterial gill rot, and other ailments can occur. To treat and control these conditions, the pond water is treated with a 2-3 mg/L solution of potassium permanganate.

  • Prevention of Fungal Diseases in Fish and Frogs

To prevent these types of diseases, the entire pond is treated with a 4-5 mg/L solution for 4-5 hours to prevent water mold in fish. For skin diseases in frogs, a 10-20 mg/L Potassium Permanganate solution is applied for 4-5 hours.

  • Disease Prevention and Control in Eels, Shrimp, and Crabs
  • In shrimp and certain aquatic turtles, such as the yellow-throated water turtle, golden-headed turtle, and other species, the bacterium Aeromonas hydrophila causes perforation disease. For treatment, immerse them in a 15-20 ppm potassium permanganate solution for 20-30 minutes. Afterwards, apply the prescribed active pharmaceutical ingredient.
  • To treat vibriosis, gill rot, red fin disease, and fin rot in eels, add 3 g/L to the eel pond.
  • To disinfect damage from shell rot in turtles, clean the decaying area with a 0.5% potassium permanganate solution. Then, coat the affected part with oxytetracycline.
  • Treatment and Control of Grass Carp Trauma

Observed ailments that cause harm to fish include bacterial infections, skin molds, and furunculosis. For the treatment and control of Grass Carp trauma, a 20 g/m³ Potassium Permanganate solution is used.

Potassium permanganate is used in agriculture as a fungicide and bactericide. It is also utilized as a disinfectant for seeds, soil, and cut flowers. In animal husbandry, it is used as an antiseptic, antifungal, antiparasitic agent, and a digestive system regulator.
