Advantages of Ammonium Chloride Over Ammonium Sulfate in the Agricultural Sector

Ammonium Chloride and Ammonium Sulfate can be used as a nitrogen source in agriculture, especially in paddy fields. However, one of these two chemicals has advantages over the other.

Advantages of Using Ammonium Chloride in Agriculture:

  • When Ammonium Sulfate is used, toxic H2S gas is released into the environment. With Ammonium Chloride, this chemical gas is not formed. This prevents the poisoning of seedlings.
  • The presence of the Chloride (Cl-) ion inhibits the nitrification of the Ammonium (NH4+) ion. Additionally, it aids the formation of algae in rice paddies. These ions help reduce nitrogen loss, and the ammonium chloride is absorbed by the algae, which increases its fertilizer efficiency and allows for a slow conversion to nitrogen.
  • The presence of chloride ions in the soil contributes to photosynthesis. This aids in the formation and strengthening of plant fibers. Through these beneficial effects, the concentration of soluble nitrogen compounds in rice plants is kept under control. Combining all these benefits helps prevent the occurrence of rice blast.
  • It provides a protective effect when used together with formic acid and nitrates for the preservation of green fodder in silos.
